Fast disappearing due to extensive development what remains of RAF Ashbourne aerodrome will not exist much longer. Number Fourty Two Operational Training Unit (42 OTU) arrived at RAF Ashbourne from RAF Andover in Oct 1942 with their aircraft Whitley's, Blenheim's, Oxfords, & Anson's. In Sept 1943 AW Albemarle aircraft arrived & 42 OTU became the main training unit for this mediocre aircraft then 42 OTU's role changed when 38 Group took over, with its airborne duties including glider towing. Four Albemarle's from Ashbourne took part in the D-Day operations & one failed to return Albemarle P1442 is thought to have been shot down near Caen, Normandy with the seven crew killed. No.42 OTU disbanded in March 1945 and the aerodrome was abandoned in 1954.
