Step into Melbourne as it appeared in 1931. A city of grand boulevards, monumental architecture and expansive gardens, captured at a pivotal moment in its history. Filmed during the Great Depression, this early sound documentary presents an idealised portrait of Melbourne, moving through iconic streets, public buildings and green spaces including St Kilda Road, Princes Bridge, Parliament House, Fitzroy Gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Beautifully photographed by Arthur Higgins, the film is probably the first talkie documentary made about Melbourne. It offers a rare cinematic invitation to view the city as audiences did more than ninety years ago. This black-and-white travelogue was directed by Frank Thring Snr, whose Melbourne-based production company Efftee Film Productions played a pioneering role in the early development of Australian sound cinema.
