This video is a quirky compilation of repeat visits to Skanderbeg Square and includes a cameo from the Prime Minister in the run-up to the 2025 election. Historical Notes: “Skanderbeg” was born Gjergj Kastrioti (1405-1468). He is a national hero who led a 25yr resistance against the Ottomon Empire in the 15th century. His father was Macedonian and his mother was Albanian. He is considered a hero in many Balkan states. The mosaic at Skanderbeg Square was created by 5 artists in 1980 to tell the story of the Albanian struggle. The tiles at Skanderbeg are made of stone from different regions of Albania and near the center is a grouping of stones engraved with the name of their region (including one surprise find!) Most of the religious buildings in Tirana are new, but the Et’hem Bey Mosque (1821) at Skanderbeg Square is one of the few that were not destroyed during Enver Hoxha’s rule. The beautiful Bank of Albania (Shqiperise Bank) was built by Italy in 1938 and is an example of Rationalist architecture. As of 2025, they give free tours of the inside (wonderful tour!) but no photos are allowed. The giant head that looks out over the square is that of Skanderbeg.
