A great day on the hills today with Ruairidh. We were in Glen Shiel beside Loch Cluaine. Things didn’t quite go to plan. My fault as I misjudged the mountain conditions at over 1100m. We climbed A’Chralaig (Gaelic for the basket) with the aid of micro spikes and ice axe. Got up to the top of Stob Coire na Cralaig (1008m) but on the descent to final Bealach to second Munro I was uncomfortable with the hard compact snow /ice and didn’t feel safe using micro spikes with the huge drops on either side, so aborted the trip and made an exit down its SW ridge to the valley below. Stupid thing was we had our full set of crampons back in the van. Better to be safe than sorry, the hills aren’t going anywhere soon.
