In this message to the AMI conference, Dick Distelhorst urges immediate, people-led action to pass the American Monetary Act. He argues the root cause of recurring crises is a privately owned, debt-based, interest-laden money system, and condemns the 2008 response as a massive bailout of “too big to fail” banks instead of citizens. He proposes a simple alternative: direct “people’s bailout” checks—framed as $5,000 per person—and claims the Federal Reserve could do it even under the current system by financing Treasury issuance. The talk then becomes a practical organizing toolkit: a ready-to-send email script, step-by-step instructions to call and write Congress, and materials for speeches to local civic bodies. He closes by widening the reform agenda—publicly financed elections, progressive taxation and wealth taxes, fair trade over free trade, ending wars, protecting Social Security, climate action, media reform, and prosecution of financial fraud—while insisting public control of money is the first necessary step that makes everything else possible.
