In this interview with Ben Wiess of the Historical Soceity of Ottawa Dr. Lynn Gehl makes the case that, two centuries later, we have yet to resolve crucial issues such as that our nation’s capital – the “heart of Canada” – continues to trespass on the traditional and unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg and that the violation of Algonquin rights continues. Note: Parliament Hill was previously called Barrack Hill not Garrison Hill. Barrack Hill was purchased in 1823 from a settler person, versus the Algonquin People, for the King. This purchase totalled 415 acres (see Appendix to the Report of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, of Canada, for the year 1858). This was Chief Constant Pinesi Land. Questions addressed are: 1. We don’t know much about you or your early life; Can you talk about that? 2. What directed you to attend university; can you talk about your academic journey? 3. It was a decades long effort; can you talk about Gehl v Canada, and unknown and unstated paternity and the Indian Act? 4. One of your areas is Indigenous knowledge (IK). Can you talk about this; and the methodology you developed, Debwewin (deb way win) Journey? 5. Can you talk about Algonquin contact/post contact history? 6. Where are the Algonquin First Nations located today? 7. Can you talk about the 1764 Treaty at Niagara? (Do the Algonquin they have any land treaties?) 8. What is the difference between what Canada calls the “modern treaty process” and the “land claim process”? 9. Can you talk about the Algonquins of Ontario’s 2016 Agreement in Principle? 10. Indigenous identity fraud aka pretendianism is a real issue. How is it harming the Algonquin in terms of the 2016 AIP; and in terms of research and knowledge production that shapes policy and legislation? 11. Can you talk about intersectional oppression and the work you do on Indigenous women and girls with disabilities?
