Take A Minute …and transport yourself to another time & place. Bangor by the sea - a historic, vibrant, and culturally rich city on the northern tip of North Down and the Ards Peninsula. It was awarded city status in 2022. As you fly towards the seafront, Bangor Marina dominates the view. Nestled into the shore front, it’s one of the island's largest marinas which has achieved Blue Flag Award status and been accredited with 5 Gold anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association. As you approach the harbour look down. This is Eisenhower Pier along which you will find mosaics that depict the Boroughs role in the Second World War, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s historic send off to the hundreds of Allied ships gathered in Bangor Bay before the D Day landings. It was renamed in 2005 by General Eisenhower’s granddaughter. The seafront area with its picturesque promenade forms part of the 16 mile long stretch of coast referred to as the North Down Coastal Path, beginning in Holywood through to Donaghadee.
