Andong Hahoe Folk Village is where the family of Ryu has lived for generations for 600 years. Ryu Un-ryong, a Confucian scholar, and Ryu Sung-ryong, a secretary in Joseon Dynasty, are famous. The name of the village, 'Hahoe', means 'water', which means that the Nakdong River is winding its village in 'S' shape. Hahoe Village is located along mountains and rivers and is considered the best place for people to live in Feng Shui. There is a 600-year-old Zelkova called 'Samsindang' in the middle of the village. All the houses in Hahoe Folk Village are built around the trees and look towards the river. It is very different from most houses in Korea being built look towards the south. ☞ Visited Elizabeth II of United Kingdom. Queen Elizabeth II of UK visited the Andong Hahoe Folk Village on April 21, 1999, the home of Confucianism. That day was the Queen's 73rd birthday. The queen was delighted to receive Korean traditional birthdays from residents of the village and eat Korean food with chopsticks. The villagers showed the traditional dance to the queen. The queen and the attendants who watched it applauded and responded. ☞ Registered as a World Heritage Site. Hahoe Folk Village was registered as the 10th World Heritage Site in Korea with the Gyeongju Yangdong Village at the 34th World Heritage Committee held in Brasilia, Brazil in July 2010. According to the proposed resolution, the harmony and arrangement of the buildings here show the social structure of the Joseon Dynasty and the Confucian culture of Yangban. UNESCO appreciated the continuity of this tradition for many years. UNESCO also appreciated the fact that the intangible cultural heritage related to the lives and beliefs of people such as literary works, artworks, academic and cultural achievements, community plays, and traditional ceremonial events of Korean Confucian scholars has been passed on for generations.
