Can video games be a form of self-expression? For me, the answer is a resounding yes. Ever since I was young, I found myself drawn to creating and playing as women characters in games—not because of the typical assumptions, but because it allowed me to explore a side of myself that real life never made room for. In this video, I reflect on how gaming has given me a space to break free from the rigid expectations of masculinity, experiment with identity, and experience a kind of gender expression I wouldn't have otherwise. From character creation in RPGs to exploring clothing and makeup in games like Infinity Nikki and Final Fantasy XIV, video games have given me a creative outlet that society often denies men. I also dive into the broader conversation about gender, identity, and the unspoken rules that dictate how we present ourselves. Why is self-expression so limited by gender norms?
