See progress as we renovate Pineapple Guava Espalier (Acca sellowiana previously known as Feijoa sellowiana) at the Houston Botanic Garden, it’s a key feature of the Culinary Garden. Learn more about our Pruning work https://kinggardeninc.com/garden-care... and Training https://kinggardeninc.com/training Our objective is to Train the plants and the Horticultural staff to achieve excellence. With this series of plants the intended shape is an Informal Espalier Fan. Winter is an ideal time for this type of Renovation pruning, before plants are actively growing and while insects and diseases are less active. The bare stems now exposed to sunlight can be expected to produce some new growth, causing the plants to fill in, producing more fruit and flowers on the stems that remain. Espalier History - this horticultural practice is first recorded during Ancient Roman times, 625 BCE through CE 476. The word Espalier - originated in the 1660’s from French, the term for a fan shaped trellis for ornamental or fruit trees, from Italian spalliera "stake-works shoulder-high," from spalla "shoulder," from Latin spatula.
