Most factory-made cigarette filters are manufactured with a filter. Contrary to common belief, cigarettes with filters are not safer than unfiltered cigarettes. In fact, filters can increase the palatability of smoking and cause people to inhale more deeply. A new editorial in Addiction journal highlights the upcoming Tobacco and Vapes Bill as an opportunity for the UK Government to ban cigarette filters in the interests of public health and the environment. Lead author, Dr Katherine East, says: “Cigarette filters were designed to give the false impression of safety. In reality, they do not reduce toxicant exposure and may even increase harm, because they lead people to inhale deeper and for longer and can embed harmful fibres and microplastics in the lungs." Hazel Cheeseman, Chief Executive of ASH, says: "Filters are a marketing con to keep people smoking, protecting tobacco industry profits. This incredibly successful deception means the majority of people are unaware filters have no health benefits. The government has an opportunity to stop enabling this deception and ban filters outright." 📖 Read the editorial in Addiction journal: https://doi.org/10.1111/add.70200 DOI: 10.1111/add.70200
