The spooky ‘Black Agnes’ statue in Montpelier’s Greenmount Cemetery adorns the grave of John E. Hubbard, who died in 1899 a wealthy but disliked man. This statue was created by sculptor Karl Bitter, but is based on another statue of ‘Grief’ created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. However, its ghost story and its name is based on yet another, similar, statue (‘Black Aggie’) that adorns the grave of Felix Agnus in Baltimore. Whatever you do, don’t sit on its lap at midnight. This Place in History is produced in partnership by Local 22 & Local 44 (www.mychamplainvalley.com) and the Vermont Historical Society.
