Custom Synth Mods👉 https://severedmachines.com/ New Angelspit Album👉 https://angelspit-official.bandcamp.c... New Miss FD EP👉 https://missfd.bandcamp.com/album/eup... This week we’re diving into one of the most unique Yamaha CS70Ms in existence — a recently serviced, heavily upgraded one-of-a-kind CS70M, modded by Ramiro at Severed Machines. Ramiro has confirmed he’s offering these same two incredible upgrades to anyone’s CS70M, and after experiencing them first-hand, I can say they’re game-changers for this legendary polysynth. The Yamaha CS70M – History, Context, and Flaws Released in 1981, the Yamaha CS70M is often seen as the younger sibling to the legendary CS-80 — but it’s far more than a “budget” model. It was Yamaha’s first and only big analog polysynth to feature a CPU (the Z80 — the same processor found in the Sequential Prophet-5), with only 6 kilobytes of code running the whole instrument. This digital control brought patch memory and advanced modulation options to a CS-series synth, but also introduced compromises: No direct aftertouch to brilliance — unlike the CS-80, the CS70M’s aftertouch couldn’t be routed to brilliance or volume. You could send it to LFO depth, but not in the same expressive, direct way the CS-80 allowed. Over-aggressive LFO to VCO routing — the first LFO’s control voltage was simply too strong for musical vibrato, making it nearly impossible to get subtle CS-80-style pitch modulation without affecting other destinations. Ramiro’s CS70M Modifications Ramiro at Severed Machines fixed both of these issues, transforming the 70M into a much more expressive and musically versatile instrument: Aftertouch to Brilliance Mod – Adds the missing direct aftertouch-to-brilliance routing, just like on the CS-80, with smooth, non-digitized control (no stepping). On this unit, the output switch was repurposed as the on/off toggle for this feature. Tamed LFO to VCO Mod – Smooths and scales the LFO’s pitch modulation so it’s perfect for CS-80-like vibrato, without affecting the other LFO destinations like VCF, VCA, or pulse width. How the CS70M Differs from the CS-80 The CS70M doesn’t try to be the CS-80 — and that’s a good thing. It’s not as light, airy, or “orchestral” in tone. Instead, it’s more aggressive, punchy, and powerful while still retaining the unmistakable, magical Yamaha CS filter sound. These new mods make it far more playable and expressive than stock, finally letting it deliver the kind of nuanced performance the hardware was always capable of. What to Expect in the Livestream In this livestream, I’ll be: Demonstrating both new modifications in depth. Exploring the CS70M’s sound design potential with the enhanced modulation options. Comparing its tone and behavior to the CS-80 to highlight their differences. Pushing the upgraded CS70M to its limits with pads, leads, basses, and experimental textures. Celebrating the legacy of the Yamaha CS series, from the CS-50 to the CS-80 and beyond. If you’re into vintage synthesizers, analog polysynths, the Yamaha CS series, or rare custom mods, you won’t want to miss this one.
