2.1 ID: 73417418 Normally, while I think most of the levels made on the 1.6 GDPS are good, none of them really stood out to me in terms of uniqueness/overall execution. That is until now when Awedsy released his latest level, Surface. Surface, in my opinion, is definitely one of the extreme standouts compared to other recent 1.6 levels, for a few reasons. First, the theming is especially very well done for a 1.6 level; right of the bat, it's very easy to tell that this is themed underwater, with fish, ruins-like structures, and design elements, as well as a nice attempt at the sunlight on the surface of shallow water. Such theming like this is extremely uncommon on 1.6. Second, I like the creativity in the details, object usage, and shapes. While yes, we have seen many ideas in this level used a lot in other older levels, I still think there are many elements worth noting, such as the zig-zag triangle pillars that look like columns in the first ball part, other background patterns like in the first UFO part, and so on. Additionally, such details are used in a way with a very distinct "purpose", in contrast to things added just for the sake of filling space/just having the idea there. I feel like that's a common personal dislike for me across many of the other recent 1.6 levels; they often have decoration that looks super distracting/added for the sake of filler. Some of the last few parts, i.e. cube, have very cool and pleasing structuring as well. Those parts really do make it feel very landscape-ish and cave-like (the ship part). I also like the pulse work here as well; they are apparent, but also not too distracting, which is pretty hard to pull off in my opinion. Now onto the gameplay. While I think it plays fine for the most part, it's very deceptive in terms of difficulty; it looks much easier than it actually is. There are many clicks (especially in the last cube) that are learny due to them being surprisingly tight. The sync for me was also pretty off in many places like the first UFO, which required more learning and getting used to, which did feel weird. But overall, I think this is a great 1.6 level, and I think Awedsy really did do a fantastic job! As for how it holds up in 2.1, I can definitely see this getting a least a star rate, probably a feature as well. I can't wait to see what Awedsy has to offer in the future, I think he's very underrated. Thumbnail by Hsam: / @hsam_ix
