Creative Communicator 6c: Models and Visualizations (ISTE Standards for Students)

Kate Dehbashi’s middle school students in her computer science class in the Los Angeles Unified School District take to Minecraft to re-create models of world landmarks that they’re learning about in their history classes. In that process they’re using ISTE Creative Communicator Standard 6c: “Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects, such as visualizations, models or simulations.” Dehbashi works with her students’ history teacher to identify world landmarks they’ll be learning about, places like the Taj Mahal, the Blue Mosque and the Christ the Redeemer statue. In Minecraft, they build the structures block by block. “There’s a huge difference between looking at a picture of a structure and building a structure,” she said.
