How sperm takes birth and get mature to meet Miss Eggy (The love of Mr Sperm's life). It's an third part of this virtual story and the reproductive system. Sperm formation process in human body is called spermatogenesis. It occurs in a few stages in which germ cells (Spermatogonia) which are linked in the seminiferous tubules are finally transformed into Sperms (spermatozoa). The seminiferous tubules also contain the Sertoli cells which help in this process. Stages: Spermatocytogenesis (Formation of spermatids) A. Multiplication Phase B. Growth Phase C. Maturation Phase Spermiogenesis Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. These cells are our sex cells – sperm in males, eggs in females. During meiosis one cell? divides twice to form four daughter cells. In cell biology, mitosis is a part of the cell cycle when replicated chromosomes are separated into two new nuclei. Cell division gives rise to genetically identical cells in which the number of chromosomes is maintained. The primordial germ cell of testes forms spermatids. It has three-phase Multiplication Phase:-The primary germ cell that present in the seminiferous tubule multiplies to form spermatogonia (2n) by mitotic division. B. Growth Phase:- The spermatogonia increase in size by the accumulation of nuclear material and attain maturity,called as primary spermatocytes(2n). C. Maturation Phase:- Here two maturation division occurs. Firstly, primary spermatocytes from secondary spermatocytes (n) by reduction division of meiotic-I. Again secondary spermatocytes from spermatids(n) by meiotic –II. Spermiogenesis: The process by which rounded nonmotile spermatids are converted to active and mobile sperms is called Spermeogenesis . 1. The nucleus shrinks ,chromosome become closely packed. 2.All nuclear material (except DNA) get lost. 3. The sperm nucleus become elongated and narrow. 4.The spermatid contain two centriole in the centrosome which move to lie behind the nucleus. 5. All mitochondria spirally arranged in the middle piece of spermatozoa. 6. The Golgi apparatus form acrosome . 7.Most of cytoplasm are eliminated and remaining forms a condensed layer surrounding the middle piece. Sperm Structure: It has two parts A. Head B.
