Sankaran, the protagonist of the film was born in 1964 when Communist Party of India splits into two. His father Koran is an agricultural labourer and a communist sympathizer. Sankaran shares his father’s dreams but has to contend with the realities of the changing world. He becomes a part-time teacher and later, a journalist. By the time his daughter Shikha comes of age, it is 1990s when Babri Masjid is demolished, and communalist politics has gathered momentum in national politics. Now, both the ghosts of casteism and the struggles of Dalits for self respect have assumed new social forms and political shapes. The film ends in the present. Now, Sankaran’s daughter, fighting her way through the system, is a judge. For her and the family, it is an occasion to celebrate and also a reminder about the struggles ahead.
