We are having a lot of fun volunteering at Big Cypress National Preserve. Today we drove a swamp buggy deep into the preserve to look for Melaleuca which is an invasive plant that is native to Australia and Malaysia. Melaleuca forms dense stands resulting in the almost total displacement of native plants that are important to the wildlife. Melaleuca forests are a serious fire hazard because of the oils contained within the leaves. Possession of melaleuca with the intent to sell or plant is illegal in Florida.
