The QR section was presented as a strategic numbers game, where time pressure is more of a challenge than mathematical difficulty. Students must answer 36 questions in 26 minutes — about 43 seconds per question — meaning efficient decision-making is crucial. The trainers stressed the importance of skipping complex, multi-step questions (especially those with awkward numbers, close answer options, or excessive data) and focusing first on easier, faster wins. Estimation and answer elimination were promoted as powerful time-saving tools, with examples like rounding awkward decimals or predicting patterns based on answer endings. The team also highlighted the inefficiency of the UCAT’s on-screen calculator, recommending strong mental maths and whiteboard shortcuts instead. Regular practice with the actual UCAT calculator was encouraged, especially using keyboard shortcuts for multiplication and memory functions (M+, M-, MRC). Candidates were advised to study common time traps, such as unnecessarily reading long question stems, and to develop the habit of looking at the question first, then scanning the data only if needed. Overall, the guidance focused on strategic skipping, calculator mastery, and building familiarity with recurring question types to boost speed and accuracy.
