Laryngeal Cancer

The most common location for laryngeal cancer is the glottis (i.e., vocal cords). Early-stage glottic laryngeal cancer (T1-2 N0) can be cured with radiotherapy alone, and the glottis has minimal lymphatic drainage so there is no need for extensive elective lymph node radiation. Cancers that involve the supraglottic or subglottic larynx do have more extensive lymph node drainage, and they typically require bilateral neck coverage. In this talk, we review general paradigms of laryngeal cancer management, and important studies specific to laryngeal cancer, including the use of modest hypofractionation for early-stage glottic cancers, and the use of chemoradiotherapy as a larynx preservation approach for locally advanced tumors.
