In the year 2000, when RN Tagore Hospital opened its doors, it was just a small 25-bed cardiology unit. Among the early pioneers was Dr. Debdatta Bhattacharyya—a young consultant cardiologist returning from Leeds, UK, full of purpose and hope. “I found myself among a number of cardiologists who were also just beginning their journey,” he recalls, his voice layered with pride and nostalgia. What followed was not just a job—it was a mission. Over 25 years, Dr. Bhattacharyya witnessed and helped shape an extraordinary transformation. That modest unit has now grown into a 650-bed multi-specialty hospital, a towering banyan tree of care rooted in compassion and innovation. “Even in those early days, our cardiology team quickly rose to the forefront of interventional cardiology,” he shares. From just one cath lab, the hospital now houses five, handling everything from adult and pediatric interventions to the most complex structural and electrophysiological cardiac procedures. And it’s not just treatment—it’s teaching, too. Under Dr. Bhattacharyya’s leadership, the department has trained over 50 specialists who are now serving communities across India. “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved—together,” he says, pausing with emotion. He is quick to extend gratitude—to his colleagues, his team, and above all, to Dr. Devi Shetty, whose vision laid the foundation of this institution built on affordable, quality healthcare. “It’s been a great and inspiring journey.
