About our new album: Scenes of a Folk Life explores the meeting point between folk traditions from the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway and classical music. Featuring works by Julius Röntgen, Amanda Maier, and Edvard Grieg, the album presents new arrangements for string ensemble that bring forward dances, songs, and the shared spirit of these three countries. The melodies of Grieg's 4 Norwegian Folk Dances, Op. 35 derive from Ældre og nyere norske Fjeldmelodier (Old and New Mountain Songs), compiled in 1853 by fellow Norwegian composer-organist Ludvig Mathias Lindeman. Across the foie movements Grieg draws on the halling, a traditional Norwegian dance in duple or triple metre that appears frequently in his piano music.
