Bio By She Rox All Female Bands: San Francisco, California is home to pioneering all female punk rockers Tribe 8. The band began in 1991 at a time when glam metal hair bands ruled the world, they quickly gained a large underground following for their brash, unapologetic brand of punk rock and found themselves at the forefront of a new movement that many termed “Queercore” that would eventually see legions of openly gay bands expressing themselves through music. Tribe 8 not only began the Queercore movement but also the Riot Girl movement that became more prominent later in the 1990’s, although the band itself confronted tough issues from rape, to gay and lesbian and transgender issues, they managed to do it in a way that combined humor and punk rock antics that many, even some women found to be a bit controversial, all girl fluff was far from the band’s agenda and refused to be censored as a band or in their live shows from playing topless or in their bra’s. Tribe 8 released their first single in 1991, and several more singles would follow before their 1995 debut Ep. Another Ep would be released the same year, before their debut full length album also in 1995, “Fist City”, by this time the line up had seen several member changes that left vocalist Lynn Breedlove, and guitarists Flipper (Silas) Howard and Leslie Mah the only original members left. With the addition of new drummer Slade Bellum and bassist Lynn Payne aka Tantrum, this line up would become the most notable for the band lasting for their next two full length albums, one in 1996 and the other 1998. Constant touring of the States and Canada to even Europe along with a growing buzz over the band and their point of views only helped to inspired legions of female musicians. Member changes would plaque the band by the late 1990’s however Tribe 8 soldiered along and inspired a 2003 documentary “Rise Above” that chronicles the band’s rise to cult status and even saw new material surface on the 2005 album, “Thanx for the Mammaries”. Drummer Slade Bellum continues to play in various bands, and vocalist Lynn Breedlove is a well-known author, activist and screenplay writer. Guitarist Flipper (Silas Howard) is an award winning director for the hit show “Transparent” as well as an accomplished writer and actor, now a transgendered man, Howard is building a strong foundation for other trans people in the television arena for being the show’s first trans director.
