Hamilton police have released the identity of a 19-year-old man who was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon near Jackson Square. Officers say the incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. in the area of King Street West and MacNab Street South, just outside the Ellen Fair-Clow office building. Sgt. Daryl Reid, a homicide detective with Hamilton police, says the victim was walking on a sidewalk when a male suspect got out of a vehicle and shot at the victim several times before fleeing westbound on King Street West. “We can confirm that there is only one shooter but we cannot confirm at this point whether there were other people in the vehicle at the time,” Reid said during a press conference Thursday. Emergency crews arrived to find a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital, with serious life-threatening condition where he later died. Police have now identified the victim as Alexander Circiumaru of Hamilton. Police say the shooting was targeted. And when paramedics arrived on scene they carried out life-saving measures and various buildings in the area were put into lockdown. “There were numerous people that we could see on video walking through that area. the government buildings, mall nearby, there’s people coming through the crosswalks at all times of the day there. there were numerous people that could have been caught in the crossfire here,” said police. Investigators say, “the shooter was a male, dressed in all back clothing, wearing a face mask, the vehicle he used is believed to be a newer model Honda Civic, either black or dark grey in colour, and a spoiler on the rear trunk, we can confirm at this time there is only one shooter, but we cannot confirm at this point if there were other people in the vehicle at the time.” Police say the vehicle was last seen driving westbound in the area of King Street West and Queen Street North. The scene was cleared today, and people in the area say they’re shaken by the incident. Police could not comment on what sort of relationship the victim and the suspect had.
