From kings and queens to magicians and sorceresses, the characters in 18th-century operas find themselves immersed in plots in which their uncontrolled passions lead them to commit acts that stray from what is considered right and just. Within this framework, the program for this concert explores the passions of characters such as Orestes, Guinevere, and Cleopatra through a selection of arias by José de Nebra and Georg Friedrich Händel. As a prologue, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Salve Regina anticipates the plea for redemption that accompanies the emotional odyssey that follows.
