Someone recently encouraged me to give a little more info or explanation with the videos. There seems to be some interest in my unusual work tools and methods, so I will try to say a bit about that. The tool in this video is sort of a pickaroon/pike pole hybrid I built just for handling firewood. It is the best solution for manually lifting and loading split wood or small diameters into a pickup or cart. Recently I saw an elderly man and woman who looked to be in their 70's, moving a large load of wood by themselves, lifting it all off the ground by hand. I know that's how most people still do it, but it is pitifully slow and unnecessarily hard on the back. We all have occasional bending and lifting to do each day, but a truckload of firewood is another matter. The back strain and exertion is more than we realize. If a man weighs 200 lbs, and his center of gravity drops 16" while bending down to lift a piece of wood (that weighs 10 lbs and will be lifted 32"), it takes 10 times more energy to lift himself, than the piece of wood. Multiply that by a few hundred times, and we are talking about some serious ft/lbs of energy.
