McNeil Island, 1870 is when the government first purchased land and in 1875 is when they would build the first penitentiary in Washington State. 1937 is when the government purchased the rest of the island for themselves thus forcing the residents to leave. Starting 1952 is when they would make the first school for the island and the prison guards and staff along with their families would live on the island and use the school. For 5 years through 1961-1966 Charles Manson would serve time in the prison. In 1976 The Federal Bureau of Prisons declared the penitentiary obsolete because of the high maintenance deeming McNeil island penitentiary the last prison in the U.S. that was only accessible through air or water and eventually the island became property of the Washington State Department of Corrections and ever since then the islands prison, school, and houses lay abandoned. In 2004 a commitment center was built for violent sex offenders when their prison sentences up to level them up and get them ready for the real world.
