Want to learn more about the project? Visit www.waterenland.be/en Production: Joris Gijsen (Willem Tel.) With the Water & Land project, CAG and KIEN aim to foster international collaboration and exchange between heritage communities, managers, and experts. In Water & Land, we document, research, and promote intangible heritage as a lever for tackling challenges such as water management, biodiversity conservation, and soil fertility. The project seeks to encourage international cooperation and knowledge exchange among heritage communities, managers, and experts. Intangible cultural heritage and sustainable development are deeply interconnected, yet today this link between heritage and ecological sustainability is far from self-evident. Through Water & Land, we aim to spread this alternative perspective on heritage. The UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) states that intangible heritage is not only a driver of cultural diversity but also a guarantee for sustainable development—be it social, economic, or ecological. Recent research shows that heritage is a valuable source of knowledge. Ancient techniques and traditional know-how can offer contemporary answers or inspiration for current issues related to biodiversity and water management. Intangible heritage can inform and inspire environmental and climate policy, or even feed scientific research. This “intimate knowledge,” as UNESCO calls it, demonstrates that sustainability is not only a scientific issue but also a local and cultural one.
