USDA states that in order to use the wording "organically grown", your farm must be certified organic or exempt from needing the certification by grossing less than 5K. This makes labeling products very difficult as you have a finite small space to convey important concepts about your product. For us it is very important to identify how our produce is grown. We were using "organically grown" since we are small and do not use any chemicals on our farm. But we are no longer exempt and are required to obtain an organic certification to claim "organically grown" on our label. So where do we go from here? Forever Foods Farm is better than organic, and we use regenerative, sustainable permaculture techniques. We are considered an "Ecological Farm" because our design is driven by the entire ecosystem, not by maximum crop output. We preserve diversity on our farm by not installing monocrops. We build and nourish our soil with compost and do not till. We work to retain water through landscaping reducing our need for irrigation. We use interplanting to provide nutrients to our crops, windbreaks and wildlife habitat. We have created food forests that utilize all 7 layers of a plant ecosystem: soil microbiome, ground cover, herbaceous, shrub, big shrub, tree canopy and vines. So from here forward we will be replacing "organically grown" to "ecologically grown" which simply put means BEYOND ORGANIC. Forever Foods Farm. July 12, 2022.
