Costruita fra il 1474 e il 1483, costituisce la più importante opera di fortificazione della città. Viene commissionata e pensata da Costanzo Sforza che perfeziona il sistema difensivo iniziato dal padre Alessandro nei primi anni della signoria sforzesca. Fin da quest’epoca l’edificio si presenta nella sua struttura: un quadrilatero con le cortine che si uniscono alle torri cilindriche ai quattro angoli e le scale a chiocciola per l’accesso ai torrioni; in pratica, una perfetta architettura bellica pronta a difendere il suo signore. Dopo Laurana (nominato per l’ultima volta in un documento del 12 febbraio 1479, anno della sua morte), i lavori proseguono sotto la guida di Cherubino da Milano, anche se rallentati per la peste che imperversa a Pesaro. Trasformata in carcere nel 1864, la rocca è stata ‘liberata’ da questa funzione nel 1989. Attualmente chiusa al pubblico per lavori di ristrutturazione che la renderanno nuovamente fruibile per eventi e visite guidate, in futuro accoglierà la sede dell’Archivio di Stato e il Museo della Fondazione Dario Fo e Franca Rame grazie all’accordo sottoscritto da Agenzia del Demanio, Ministero della Cultura e Comune di Pesaro.
