Seances & Slot Machines: The Story of Brady Lake Park

Brady Lake Amusement Park, located between Kent and Ravenna, Ohio, opened in 1891 as a beautiful, rustic resort offering picnics and pony rides to the upper class in Northeast Ohio. It closed six decades later as a tired, seedy gambling den run by the Cleveland mob. During its life, it was operated by Spiritualists -- who offered a carousel and concessions, along with seances and fortune telling -- and by wheeler dealers, who brought in big name entertainers -- Guy Lombardo, Cab Calloway, Rudy Vallee, even Gertrude Ederle. Over the years, the park was visited by hundreds of thousands of fun seekers from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. By 1949, its life came to an end, abruptly abandoned by the Cleveland Syndicate, who left to invest their money in Las Vegas casinos and hotels. It was left to the ravages of time and weather. One building still stands today or an undeveloped parcel of land. This documentary was premiered in June 2014 on Western Reserve PBS in Ohio. It was written by Dr. Fred F. Endres, professor emeritus in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University. It was narrated by veteran broadcast journalist, John Butte.
