Members of former President Jimmy Carter's Secret Service detail carried Carter's casket out the doors of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and into a hearse in Americus, Georgia. The former president's body then departs for Plains, Georgia, before heading to Atlanta on Tuesday, Jan. 7. The official state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will be held Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the White House confirmed Monday. The Carter Center released a statement saying the family has accepted an invitation from Congress for Carter, who died Dec. 29, 2024 at 100, to lie in state at the Capitol rotunda. Funeral services began on Jan. 4 and end on Jan. 9, moving from Carter's home state of Georgia to Washington, D.C.
