Puntland President, H.E. Abdiweli Ali Gas, EU Head of Delegation and Ambassador to Somalia, Michele Cervone d’Urso, FAO’s head in Somalia, Richard Trenchard, and, other donors and local fishing communities had a rare chance to meet on board the EU Naval Force Italian flagship, ITS Carabiniere, at sea off the coast of Bosasso hosted by Rear Admiral Barbieri to witness the deployment of the last of 25 FADs across the Somalia coastline from the capital Mogadishu, which started three weeks ago. Each FAD is deployed with a buoy anchored to the seabed and a large floating ‘mat’ that will attract fish in the coming months and years due to the plant life that will grow under the mat. An increase in the volume of fish around these floating “fish magnets” improves the catch of local fishermen, enhances livelihoods, raises nutrition levels and stimulates local markets. Providing protective escorts to the FAO chartered vessel deploying the FADs along the Somali coastline is only one part of the many activities being undertaken by the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) to address a broad spectrum of maritime challenges and opportunities. This exercise also exemplifies the close strategic partnership between the EU, FAO and other donors to support hard-to-reach coastal communities. The FADs are currently funded by resources provided by the governemtns of Japan and Switzerland with the EU funding the more comprehensive Maritime Security Programme (MASE) programme that will complement the FADs allowing fishermen to increase their income by providing storage and other wider benefits to the wider pastoralist communities in Somalia.
