How Does a Skull Transform into a Realistic Portrait? In this video, I draw Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders) from the skull up, demonstrating how a solid understanding of anatomy enhances portrait drawing. By studying the underlying bone structure, portrait artists can develop a deeper sense of how facial features take shape and how different skull structures influence appearance. But don’t worry—you don’t need to study anatomy like a medical student. A fundamental grasp of structure is enough to improve your art. This video also serves as a general drawing process guide. One of the best ways to improve your sketching is by watching someone more experienced (if you think they are). You’ll observe how forms are built, shading is applied, and details are refined—techniques that can help you refine your own approach. To make the learning process easier, I’ve divided the video into two screens: Left side: The full drawing process from start to finish. Right side: Close-up shots of specific details. This way, you can track both the overall progression and the fine details at the same time, helping you see how small adjustments influence the final result. Materials I Use: 📜 Paper: A page torn from the Talens Art Creation sketchbook (probably 140g), with a slightly yellowish tone. I prefer the smooth side for quick sketches, as I don’t do heavy layering. ✏️ Pencils: Green Faber-Castell pencil – For light areas or initial sketching. Tombow Mono pencil – Medium hardness, great for dark details and deep shading (my personal favorite). Uni 2mm mechanical pencil (4B lead) – Ideal for filling in dark areas, though not the best for fine details. Pentel 0.5mm mechanical pencil – Used occasionally when I’m too lazy to sharpen regular pencils. (P.S.: I use these materials simply because I happened to buy them. I haven’t tested many other brands, but over time, I’ve learned to work with their specific characteristics.)
