Plants engage in important symbiotic relationships with both bacteria and fungi that involve exchanges of nutrients; their encounters with nitrogen-fixing bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi activate the same required symbiosis pathway despite totally different outcomes. In this video, Oldroyd and colleagues describe how they identified genes that, while apparently functioning downstream of the common symbiosis pathway, are specifically required for mycorrhizal symbiosis. In a second study, they describe how one of these genes functions in the establishment of structures important for plant—fungi communication.
