The harrowing experiences of the Yazidi people, particularly women, who have been subject to severe persecution by the terrorist group, ISIS. The Yazidi, a religious minority primarily from the Sinjar region in Nineveh province in Iraq's north, have endured years of turmoil, including forced displacement under Saddam Hussein, economic collapse due to UN sanctions, and the collapse of state security after the US-led invasion in 2003. In 2014, ISIS launched an attack on the Yazidi, capturing, enslaving, and murdering many. This marked a turning point for the Yazidis as, unlike their past suffering, this incident received significant media attention. However, media coverage often stereotyped Yazidi women as passive victims of mass rape, framing their situation in a manner that reinforced cultural prejudice. Many Yazidi women and children were taken to jails across Iraq and Syria, subjected to brutal treatment and living in constant fear. To avoid being raped, some women and girls resorted to suicide. Amid these horrors, the importance of stories of captivity and resistance became evident, as these narratives were critical for coping with trauma and preserving their cultural identity. Despite knowing their whereabouts initially, international and governmental support for the Yazidi was slow to materialize, leading to a sense of abandonment among the families waiting for their loved ones' return. To date, there have been no known large-scale rescue missions to free the Yazidi captives in Iraq and Syria, deepening the plight of this vulnerable community. ISIS's heinous acts are based on its misguided belief that it must attack and kill disbelieving men and that enslaving their women is a form of protection. This belief underscores the organization's conception of how a caliphate should function and highlights the urgent need for international intervention to rescue and protect the Yazidi community
