Neighbours have told of their anguish after a woman, who spent years on death row in the US, and her carer died in a house fire in Galway. The female victim of the blaze in Connemara has been named as Sunny Jacobs, a US citizen who was sentenced to death after being wrongfully convicted of a double murder. Sonia ‘Sunny’ Jacobs (78) spent 17 years, five of which were on death row, in prison over the murder of two police officers in Florida in 1976. A man in his early 30s, named locally as Kevin Kelly, with family connections in the Moycullen area of Co Galway, also died in the fire, which broke out at around 6am yesterday morning. The fire happened at Ms Jacobs’s home in the remote and picturesque area of Gleann Mhic Mhuireann, Casla, Co Galway. Mr Kelly was understood to be a carer for Ms Jacobs, who was disabled and suffered severe ill health in the final years of her life. She moved to Ireland in the 1990s and met and later married Peter Pringle, who was also sentenced to death for the murders of two gardaí, Henry Byrne and John Morley, in Co Roscommon in 1980. Pringle served 15 years and his conviction was declared unsafe and later quashed. He died in January 2023. Ms Jacobs spent 17 years in a Florida prison after she and her husband were convicted of the murder of two police officers. Her conviction was overturned when the man who implicated the couple confessed he was in fact responsible, only after Ms Jacobs’s husband, Jesse Tafero, was executed.
