Lessons in Making Aging Accessible, From a Millenial | Kings Floyd | TEDxDirigo

Sharing personal stories from her life and connecting them to demographic trends, Kings Floyd makes the connection between accessible architecture and more connected friends, families, and communities. While accessible design is often thought as an issue for those with disabilities, Kings illuminates how everyone loses out when its not in place. Kings Floyd is a disability rights advocate and writer. Her most recent career achievements include working at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and a Youth Transition Fellow for the National Council on Independent Living. Originally from Boston, she moved from Maine to join DC forces in June 2016. She graduated with a Bachelors in English Writing, with concentrations on Language, Education and Disability Studies from High Point University. Passion projects include working on the Women’s March, the DC Pride March, and other civil rights demonstrations, as well as being the co-chair of the DC Metro ADAPT. Her guilty pleasures include carbonara, mochas and 80’s pop. Kings hopes to continue working with intersectional youth to promote disability awareness, advocacy and pride. Ms. Floyd’s long term goals include expanding the representation of people with disabilities, focusing on media, politics and healthcare. She is looking to expand her knowledge and pursue a master’s in Communication or Disability Studies to engage the market, both public and private, to be more inclusive. She continues to write articles based on the disability experience, and eventually hopes to publish a book.
