Updates to SMaX: Prevention of Wrong-Site Spinal Surgery & Procedures Hosted by Gene Tekmyster, DO and Addisu Mesfin, MD Both wrong-site surgery (WSS) and wrong-site procedures (i.e., injections, interventional procedures) are recognized risks within spine care due to the repetitive nature of the anatomy and distortion of landmarks due to prior surgery or deformity. Since 2001, the North American Spine Society (NASS) Sign, Mark and X-ray (SMaX) campaign has raised awareness and promoted prevention of WSS and procedures. Despite the SMaX campaign, with its second iteration in 2014, education on the prevention of wrong-site surgery to spine fellows and trainees is still lacking. In this session, authors of a recent addendum to the SMaX campaign will discuss current literature findings, updated recommendations, and discuss future directions. Published addendum may be viewed here: https://www.spineline-digital.org/spi...
