NOR’S NUSANTARA is a podcast series that explores the essence of the Nusantara through the language of art by highlighting influential voices, thinkers and creators in the sphere of culture from Singapore and beyond. Directed and produced by Nor, it is part of her ongoing research to explore how the language of art can contribute new knowledge towards understanding the contexts we are in. Nusantara is an ancient term that has evolved to describe the vast island chain and region that includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the southern parts of Thailand, the Philippines and East Timor. It is a regional construct synonymous with the Indonesian and Malay archipelagos that has resurfaced over time due to recent waves of conversations around decolonising the region. In a broader sense, Nusantara conveys the idea of a geographical and cultural region characterised by shared histories, languages and traditions. Nor’s Nusantara regards the Nusantara emblematically rather than literally. It considers cultural and linguistic connections of maritime Southeast Asia as a leverage to talk about regioness. It is a platform for dialogue with leading thinkers and creators as a way of picturing the region as culturally identifiable and aesthetically legible in a supposedly post-national, global borderless world. This podcast aims to probe how trade, geopolitical, religious and cultural transitions in this region have influenced concepts of who we are, where we come from and where we are going.
