CC-BY-ND All experiments at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany need fast particles. Jens Stadlmann operates and develops accelerators. He explains how ions are produced, how they reach high speeds in linear and circular accelerators, and what the new FAIR accelerator facility that is being built will be able to achieve. Jens Stadlmann studied physics at the University of Giessen and received his doctorate in 2002 on mass measurements with the GSI ESR storage ring. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by the GSI to work on the development of the FAIR accelerator, in particular the ring accelerator SIS100, which is the centerpiece of the system. In addition to his duties as deputy machine-coordinator for the accelerator SIS18, he has worked since 2012 in the department "Primary Beams" as a senior scientist and coordinator.
