In 1897 Ion Croetoriu, an ethnic-Romanian born in Albania, landed in St. Louis, The first ethnic Romanian known to arrive in America. Many of his countrymen, as well as Transylvanians and native Romanians followed him, using our city as their Gateway to America. Other Romanian-ethic Europeans followed, and in 1934 they founded St. Thomas the Apostle Romanian Orthodox Church. And for the past 20+ years the descendents of those early immigrants - and more recent arrivals - have hosted an ethnic festival in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood of St. Louis, celebrating their contributions to the cultural stew that is America. Though the planning takes months the cooking is done only in the final days, assuring the freshest quality and the most satisfying tastes. The shish kebobs are second to none. Also featured are half-chickens in addition to Romanian sausages (mititei), always made from scratch using guarded family recipes. Not to be forgotten are time-honored Romanian family favorites such as ciorba (a delectable soup) and sarmale (small rolls of cabbage stuffed with a meat and rice combination. In addition to traditional dance presentations by the local chapter of the International Folk Dance Association, there are Romanian wines, icon painting, church tours and surprises yet to be planned. Look for the next edition of the festival in October. The details will be at: http://www.st-thomas-the-apostle.org
