🗺️Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/R6awuLrapDrkX... 00:00 Intro 4:34 Going up the mountain 20:42 Grotto Buddha The following is an introduction to the Daxiangshan Grottoes: Basic Overview • Geographical location: Located in the southwest of Gangu County, Tianshui City, Gansu Province, 100 kilometers east of Tianshui Maijishan Grottoes, and 40 kilometers west of Wushan Shuiliandong Grottoes. • Historical evolution: It was first built in the Northern Wei Dynasty, and the main building, the Buddha Grotto, was excavated in the heyday of the Tang Dynasty. In 2001, it was announced by the State Council as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. • Scale layout: The total length is 1.5 kilometers, the construction control zone is 640 acres, there are 22 existing caves, 15 wooden structures, and a total of 242 square meters of murals and 110 statues of various sizes on the mountain. Main attractions • Gangu Buddha: It is Sakyamuni Buddha, 23.3 meters high and 9.5 meters wide at the shoulders. It was carved 200 meters above the ground. From the appearance, it combines the characteristics of the early Indian Buddhist Gandhara style, the Buddhist statue style during the Gupta Dynasty, and the Northern Zhou Dynasty and the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The large spiral high flesh bun on its head reflects the historical time and space spanned by the statue from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the prosperous Tang Dynasty. • Taihao Palace: Located on the first platform of Daxiang Mountain, it was built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. The total area of the temple site is 480 square meters. The palace gate and the main hall face south and north, with carved beams and painted buildings, and flying eaves. There are ancient cypresses in the palace and an eight-diagram pool in the courtyard. The main hall originally had a statue of Fuxi, wearing mulberry clothes and holding an eight-diagram plate in his right hand. • Yongming Temple: Located to the south of Lingyan Temple, on the platform in Shifugou, it faces southeast and northwest. It consists of the mountain gate, the Heavenly King Hall, the dining hall, the guest hall, the second bell and drum building, the Thirteen Patriarchs Hall, the Kalayana Hall, the Mahavira Hall, and the Sutra Library, with a total area of 4,224 square meters. Artistic Features • Sculpture Art: The Gangu Buddha is unique in its shaping techniques. For example, the upper ear edges of the Buddha's ears are raised to the top of the Buddha's head beyond the hairline, which solves the visual difference problem of viewing tall statues in a limited position. In addition, special techniques are also used in the carving of the eyebrow arches, pupils and other parts, so that the Buddha statues look kind and peaceful from all angles at the foot of the mountain or in the caves. • Architectural Art: There are 15 wooden structures in Daxiang Mountain, most of which are in the architectural style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties and have high artistic value. These buildings and the grottoes complement each other, forming a unique architectural landscape. • Mural Art: There are 242 square meters of murals in the whole mountain, which are rich in content and bright in color. The themes are mostly Buddhist stories and myths and legends. The painting style is delicate and the lines are smooth. They are treasures of ancient Chinese mural art.
