This sermon, "God's Sovereignty and Testing," explores Judges 3:1-8, focusing on why God allowed enemy nations to remain in the Promised Land to test a new generation of Israelites. In Chinese culture, "peace and prosperity" is often seen as the ultimate blessing. However, the sermon warns that comfort can be a "double-edged sword". While it manifests God's grace, it also leads to spiritual atrophy. The new generation in Judges grew up in the "land of milk and honey" without experiencing the Red Sea or the wilderness; thus, their faith was "second-hand information" rather than a personal life-commitment. God intentionally left hostile nations to teach the next generation how to "learn war"—not just physical combat, but how to rely on God in the heat of battle. Muscular Memory for Faith: Just as physical skills require practice, spiritual maturity requires personal experience. God wants our faith to move from "classroom theology" to "muscle memory". The Trap of "Second-hand Grace": Children of believers often view faith as a social benefit rather than a sacred covenant. God allows them to experience their own "wilderness"—such as career failures or moral dilemmas—to transform them from "inheritors" of a religion into "covenant-keepers" with a Living God. The sermon distinguishes between temptation (seeking to destroy) and testing (seeking to refine). God is sovereign over both. Compromise begins with "living among" the world, moves to "intermarriage," and ends in "serving their gods". Scripture describes this betrayal as "spiritual adultery," as God desires a relationship characterized by the exclusive love of a marriage. To break the cycle of failure, we must stop using God as a "tool" for success and acknowledge Him as the true King of our lives.
