"Tachiwara" is the principle in Aiki Ken (Aikido Sword) by which nage simultaneously clears the partner's blocking sword and executes a clear, centered cut. This principle is frequently used by Saotome Shihan at his seminars, and is a critical part of most of the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba weapons kata. However, there is much confusion on how successfully cultivate a powerful, sharp, fast, blending tachiwara strike for integration in black belt test kata. This video introduces the first of (at least) two significant ways for approaching and cultivating effective tachiwara: The "C" Cut or "Lightning" Cut. The clip breaks down the shapes and angles desired in the body and the sword, and provides some exercises that can be explored and practices to increase the "sharpness" and clarity of tachiwara execution. The "Aiki Lab" series focuses on investigating and simplifying principles and foundations of Aikido, presented by the instructors of the Aikido Chuseikan of Tampa Bay. We emphasize the "laboratory" concept to cultivate a positive, exploratory and experimental mindset and approach to principles-based training. The ASU Aikido Chuseikan of Tampa Bay dojo is affiliated with the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba and Aikido World Headquarters, and provides quality adult and family martial arts instruction in Tampa, Florida. http://tampaaikido.com http://tampaaikido.com/facebook
