Memory Reactivation in Changing Contexts: A Dynamic Interplay Between Working Memory and Long-Term Memory Eren Günseli, Sabanci University Working memory has traditionally been viewed as the primary buffer for retrieving long-term memories, but recent research suggests that long-term memory can also directly influence behavior. This raises the question of whether long-term memories are reactivated in working memory based on specific task demands. We conducted six experiments to investigate how reactivation varies with different demands. Our results showed stronger memory reactivation when task rules or context changes, compared to a recognition baseline. However, no significant increase in reactivation occurred when participants anticipated interference or needed attentional guidance. This suggests that memory reactivation is not primarily aimed at mitigating interference or guiding behavior but is more robust when adapting memories to new situations. These findings challenge traditional models, which often view working memory as the default buffer for reactivated long-term memories. Instead, we propose a more dynamic interaction between long-term and working memory, driven by the need to adapt to changing environments.
