December 11, 2021 Haines, Alaska It’s been a few weeks since I was able to fly recreationally. It’s been cold and snowy. How much snow? 84”. That’s over 210 centimeters. Where does all the snow go when it’s cold? No where. That’s where. It stays on the ground and if you don’t push it out of the way, it continues to stack up. We are debating on shoveling our next door house’s roof off. There is visibly 5 feet of snow piled on there. However, it won’t be the work that would kill you, the fall… the fall would kill you. Last weekend was the memorial from the December 2, 2020, Haines Slide that took the lives of two amazing citizens. I was finishing up a memorial video for the community that they wanted to include some of the service. Here’s what the ending video looked like:    • Haines Strong - Remembering December 2 - 2020   It was a labor of love; knowing both of the people we lost made it a challenge to make. What I did learn is that everyone has a different experience from that day. Those stories need to be told and recorded. Okay, technical information.... flew from two locations: parking lot at the clinic and from my back door. There were some FAA Checks that needed to be approved before flying down town. I stayed below the max height while flying over Main St in order to stay out of any airplane's path. I was hyper-vigilant when listening for low flying aircraft. The advice from Jason Eson (   / hippotour  ) was to fly it like I stole it. You may notice I flew over the harbor and over open water. It was nerve wracking to do so, but it made for a better video. Alaskan winters provide short windows for flying. Here it is at 330pm and it's already dark. Not just twilight, but DARK. Hope you enjoy.
