The festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam (April-May) and takes place at the Vadakkunnathan Temple, with processions, fireworks, and a spectacular display of tradition. Symbolic Meeting of Deities: The festival represents the symbolic meeting of deities from various temples, primarily Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady. Grand Processions: Participating temples bring their idols to the Vadakkunnathan Temple, accompanied by caparisoned elephants, percussion ensembles (Chenda Melam and Pancha Vadyam), and vibrant processions. Kudamattam (Parasol Exchange): A highlight of the festival is the Kudamattam, where the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady temples compete in exchanging decorated parasols. Fireworks: The festival culminates in a spectacular display of fireworks. Large-Scale Event: Thrissur Pooram draws large crowds of devotees and tourists, making it one of the most popular temple festivals in India. Multiple Participating Temples: Besides the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady temples, other participating temples include Ayyanthole, Karumukku, Lalur, Neythalakkavu, Choorakkattukara, Chembukkavu, Kanimagalam, and Panamukkumpilly.
