The human body can be visualized as a three-dimensional object, and it is often useful to divide it into planes, or imaginary flat surfaces. These planes can be used to section or cut the body or its organs in a way that allows us to better understand its structure and function. The plane along which a section is made is referred to as a body plane, and the resulting section or cut is named after that plane. There are three major body planes: sagittal, coronal (or frontal), and transverse. 1.Sagittal planes run from top to bottom and from front to back, dividing the body into left and right sections. A sagittal plane that runs down the midline of the body and divides it into equal halves is called a midsagittal plane. 2.Coronal or frontal planes run from side to side and from top to bottom, dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) sections . 3.Transverse planes run from side to side and from front to back, dividing the body into upper and lower sections. These planes are sometimes referred to as horizontal planes. While there are an infinite number of possible planes and ways to draw them, any plane that is not sagittal, coronal, or transverse is considered an oblique plane. For example, an oblique plane might run from side to side but also slightly up and down and slightly front to back.
