Cochineal is an ancient dye source that is the queen of red in the natural dyer's palette. The carminic acid in this scale insect brings vibrancy to the dye pot, and with it's pH sensitivity, cochineal can shift colors across the red spectrum from pink to orange to purple. With a dash of cream of tartar, a deep and luscious red will create vivid colors on textiles, particularly protein fibers.
